AXiS-64 Firmware Updater under MacOS 10.5 Leopard: Unable to connect to the comm port

This problem doesn't seem to occur if you've used the Firmware Updater previously under MacOSX-10.4-Tiger. but can appear if you start under 10.5. We know the following ...

  1. If you were using the Updater under 10.4-Tiger and upgrade to 10.5-Leopard, the old driver (2.2.7 for MacOS-10.4) continues to work. Well, it has for us.
  2. If you upgrade your Mac from 10.4-Tiger to 10.5-Leopard, and upgrade to the (2.2.10 for MacOS-10.5) driver, which is apparently the thing to do, the Updater works fine. Well, it does for us.
  3. If you start with 10.5-Leopard and install the old (2.2.7 for MacOS-10.4) driver, the Firmware Updater won't work. You're supposed to use 2.2.10 for MacOS-10.5.
  4. If you are running 10.4-Tiger you can use the new driver (2.2.10 for MacOS-10.5), which then won't need upgrading when you upgrade your Mac to 10.5. That's what it says on the box, but we don't know anyone who has done it.
  5. If you install the 2.2.10-for-MacOS-10.5 driver on a fresh (never had an FTDIUSBSerialDriver installed before) Mac running MacOS-10.5, there can be a problem as below.

To test, without plugging in the AXiS (USB), open the Firmware Updater and click the Update button. You should get:

If you do, you should be able to plug in your AXiS via the USB and upgrade your firmware.
Note that a /dev/tty is opened sucessfully, then an "error" of the device not found is reported, then the /dev/tty is closed ok.

You may instead get something like :

There could be another application using the port, but if this happens after restart with nothing else running then you won't be doing any firmware updating.

If we find out anything further or a way around this, we'll post something here and on the AXiS-64 forum.

Status: Upgrade using MacOSX is no longer supported. Please arrange to use the Windows facilities.
